I taught Latin American history at the college level for 40 years, and found Andrea’s childhood experience with santería very interesting. I think that one factor in the continuation of folk spiritualism today was the willingness of the Roman Catholic Church to allow such practices to continue in the colonial period, and these became intertwined with official Catholic doctrine in the colonies. This was a political decision ,I think, to make Christianity grow in the New World, but it meant that the old folk/shaman worship did not die out. In the long run this proved to be a problematic decision for the Roman Church, because middle class Catholics began to be attracted to evangelicals who denounced the ways in which spiritualism had used Christian saints and the Virgin to strike fear into people and at times fleece them by charging for their services. The growth of evangelical groups in Latin America has been astonishing in number. I am not saying that the Roman church in any way approved of these fakers, but the priests did mostly look the other way. To my mind the use of fear in religion to gain adherents is very destructive. This was a great podcast which triggered this too lengthy response. Bill Nicholas. Austin, Texas
